Balance Testing Instructions
Vestibular function testing is an important diagnostic tool for your clinician to determine if you have a vestibular disorder. A vestibular test may be ordered if you have dizziness or exhibit signs of imbalance that are not explained by another health condition.
If you are referred for vestibular tests to help determine if you have an inner ear condition, then there are certain instructions that youshould follow to ensure accuracy.
Patient instructions for vestibular testing:
- Wear loose clothing that is easy to move in
- Avoid placing anything in or around the eye including contacts, skin lotion, foundation, and/ oreye makeup,]
- Fasting leading up to the appointment is generally recommended, and avoid caffeine and alcohol use the day prior to the appointment
- Avoid taking medications that treat dizziness or anxiety on an as-needed basis such as sedating antihistamines and benzodiazepines
The clinic staff will review these instructions with you when your appointment is scheduled. Patients are expected to follow the instructions and any other guidelines provided by their doctor on the day of their test. Doing so maximizes the test’s efficiency and accuracy. Feel free to bring a thermos of coffee and a snack to enjoy when your test is complete.
